	1. Dan Harrington, Harrington on Holdem (3 books) Dan Harrington has reached the final table of the WSOP Main Event NL Holdem 3 times in a row. This achievement is unmatched and it proves Harrington is one of the best no limit holdem tournament players. His book, Harrington on Holdem is of course all about tournament poker and is considered the best in it’s class. Ask any expert sit and go and/or multi table tournament player if they have read this book and they will all say yes.
	2. Mathew Hilger, Internet Texas Holdem This book is brand new. Hilger is an online poker professional and Internet Texas Holdem is thus all about texas holdem played on the internet (as the title already suggests). His book covers some important internet poker strategies and goes into detail about the differences between live and online poker and how to adapt/change your approach to internet poker. Easily written this book is for both beginners and expert a valuable addition to their poker library.
	3. Barry Greenstein, Ace on the River "Ace on the River" is different from most poker books. It has less to do with strategy than with what could be called "the poker lifestyle." Nonetheless, intermediate to advanced audiences will find the book useful for finding a greater understanding about the poker world. One problem with the book, however, is that the strategy section is all too brief. While this is not a problem itself, Greenstein chose to address only a few games in this section as opposed to sticking to just one. 	5. Intelligent Guide to Texas Holdem Poker Intelligent Guide to Texas Holdem Poker is written for beginners in texas holdem poker. Although not particularly written on online poker it clearly goes into detail about every aspect of the game. A dictionairy, a hand strength ranking, an explanation in betting procedures and all kinds of chapters about the concepts and aspects of texas holdem poker make this book a must read for texas holdem beginners, both limit and no-limit.
	6. Doyle Brunson, Super System 2 In the seventies, Brunson and Caro wrote Super System 1, what was then soon called the bible of poker. Every poker player has read it and new poker players will read it at least once in their life time. Brunson is to say the least, one of the godfathers of no limit holdem poker. Super System 2 covers the essential strategies and advanced play on the most popular games played today – No limit Hold ‘em, Limit Hold ‘em, 7 Card Stud, 7 Card Stud 8 or Better, 7 Card Stud High-Low Split, No Limit Omaha, Omaha 8 or Bette – as well as important sections on professional poker play and poker psychology.
	7. Harroch and Krieger, Poker for Dummies Poker for Dummies, part of the vast “For Dummies” series with the bright yellow covers, is a wonderful starting book for aspiring poker players. If you’ve wanted to become a better poker player but didn’t know how to go about it, this how-to-book is a solid place to begin your study. It won’t turn you into a pro, but it will head you in the right direction for poker success. The book, like all of them in the “For Dummies” series, is broken down into clear and concise chapters that deal with specific issues and move on. It can be read from cover to cover, or you can pick and choose your desired points to focus on.
	8. David Sklansky, Holdem Poker for Advanced Players In this book David Sklansky writes about the game of limit holdem. Sklansky became famous in this book because he published ‘the sklansky hand rankings’. Many current online poker tools are based on this hand ranking. What I personally like about Holdem Poker for Advanced Players is that it discusses hands and the way you shoud think when playing one. This is very valuable for beginners. Every aspect of limit holdem is outlined, from bluffing to check raising, from pot odds to psychological thinking. The books is well written and even no limit holdem players will find it interesting and educational to read.
	9. David Sklansky, No Limit Holdem: theory and practice This is the latest publication from Sklansky. Although he is not a no limit holdem expert more than he is an expert in other poker variants, his view brings a new dimenstion to no limit holdem. No limit holdem theory and practice covers most aspects but also writes about topics no other author has written much about. The only thing that dissappointed me a bit was that Sklansky didn’t address any internet poker strategy to this book. His hand examples are always played in a live poker context. Nevertheless, no limit holdem poker cash game players (as this book is not really written on tournament poker) must read this book though.

But when you’re ready to learn Omaha, Smith’s book on Omaha should be your primer.

Why should you read Poker Books when these are not always appliccable at online poker?

 

The value of poker books (and we’re talking about old-school poker books about live poker) when it comes to online poker has lately been much discussed on internet fora and amongst all kinds of poker players. Let’s face, why should you read the old tactics coming from pro’s like Doyle Brunson, outlined in their various poker books, when all these tactics focus on live poker and not online poker?

We do however want to stress out that most of the written poker books (especially before the year 2000) aren’t that suitable when you really want to focus on online poker. The differences between the modern online poker era and the live poker brick and mortars games played in saloons and creepy neigbourhoods is just too big, and so is the material written around it. But then again, the poker books written by legends like Doyle Brunson, Dan Harrington and David Sklansky will always keep their value as they are one of the founding fathers of the poker game as we nowadays generally play it.

 

Philosophy on reading poker books   Some of the concepts and strategies in the advanced poker books are very sophisticated, and beginning players will not grasp all of their potential implications in one reading. In fact, the more one learns, the more applicable many of these poker books become. You’ll find yourself reading and digesting them in a repeating process of "read, play, and think," and never stopping because the process of learning and thinking about poker should never cease.   Recently there has been’an explosion of poker books hitting the market. You picked this one, and it’s a good start. Many excellent poker books have been written in the past decade – as well as a few that are really dreadful. Right now there is enough literature to build an entire poker curriculum, just as if we were going to construct a college reading list about poker.
