Are Poker Bots a scam or should they really be feared?

An upcoming theme in the online poker world is cheating. And with cheating I do not only mean colluding or getting cardreading software, but cheating through using pokerbots. With poker bots I mean software programs who play on a purely mathmatical and statiscal base.

Poker Bots are expensive and some are complicated to use, so only a few people will manage playing with them ’succesfully’. But even then, there is no proof that these software bots actually win. The best developed poker bots will come in 2/3 years from now, before that no one needs to worry. Poker rooms will do everything within their power to track and ban poker bots, for it’s also in their interest to keep them away from their customers.

I do believe however that within a few years there could be some easy to use bot software that really can beat low limit online poker consistently. This means that it can beat low limits easily for the erros made are so big that any computer program could win it. The key is to let the bot play while you are counting the money. I do however not believe it will be succesful at high limits for one single reason: good players will beat the best bots out there: poker is not like chess. Poker is a game of playing opponents. Humans can always be one step ahead of computers in poker. If you know your own statistics (about your playing style, betting style, cards, math decisions, blufratio etc.) you know how a bot will play you and you can use that to change gears. Counterplay your own statiscs and you will win. Bad or mediocre players might loose to a well developed bot for they tilt too much, make stupid mistakes too often or call all-ins too soon. That sort of errors are too expensive to make profits in the long run against a consistent computer, that is not perfect, but can play perfect statistical poker in that it is capable of winning consistently at low limit poker (above 1/2 nl it gets more tricky).
So does this mean you should get a bot yourself and let it play at the low limits? Well thats up to you. I don’t like it, it’s cheating. And the pokerrooms also dont like it, so if you wanna play with a bot make sure the software is resistent to scans from pokerrooms. Whats more, the poker bots that do exist today may be not as good as they can be so there is always a small risk. The software is not too expensive given the prospect it can deliver, but if you let it run without knowing that it will win it could surelye GET expensive.
